Review and Giveaway: WholesaleKeychain.com CLOSED

As a mom, I love to show off my son. What parent doesn't like to brag just a little?! Okay, so maybe even a lot. I always make sure I have some "aww"-inspiring pictures on hand that I can whip out for old acquaintances or friends and family who may not see Nate often. The problem is that he grows up so quickly that I can never keep the photos current. I think the last ones I had printed for my brag book were from Christmastime 2009. *blush* But, thanks to WholesaleKeychain.com, I have a much easier way of sharing my favorite little boy with the world.

WholesaleKeychain.com offers - you guessed it! - keychains, of just about any variety you could desire. From sports and automotive to Disney and toys and games, they have something for all ages and tastes at a budget you can afford.

WholesaleKeychain.com kindly sent me a Digital Photo Keychain and Keyring with Stand in Pink (ARV $14.99). This keychain is approximately 1.5" tall and contains 16 MB of internal memory - enough for approximately 100 pictures.

You know pink is my absolute favorite color so I was excited to try out this digital photo keychain. I admit I was kind of expecting something really cheap looking and low quality for this price but I have to say I was quite impressed! The color is stylish, shimmery and attractive - something I'd be proud to display. I had the back of my keychain engraved with my name and the quality of the engraving was superb. Very clear with no fading or shallow spots. It was a tiny bit off-center but hardly noticeable.

The best feature for me was that the software to upload photos was extremely user-friendly. Simply connect the enclosed USB adapter to your keychain and computer and run the software program when prompted.

Browse your computer to choose your photo files, crop or rotate them as needed and add to the album. When you've selected all the photos you would like to include, click "Download" and all of your photos will be instantly uploaded to your keychain. It took just a few seconds for all 84 of my photos to be downloaded so it doesn't waste any time - something any busy mom can appreciate!

The only improvement I'd like to see is an option to rearrange your photos before uploading. I found a few early photos of Nate that I wanted to add to my keychain later on but they show up at the end of the slideshow. Call me picky but I prefer my photos to appear in chronological order.

Once you unplug your keychain from the adapter, your photo slideshow will begin. It's that easy! The quality of the viewing area is fantastic. The photos really aren't grainy at all. The menu is also straightforward and easy to operate, with three simple side buttons. I like that there is an automatic shut-off option so it won't wear down the battery. But never fear - charging is easy peasy. Just plug it back into your computer via the USB to recharge! The keychain is ultra-lightweight so it doesn't weigh down your keys or purse like an album or photo wallet. The stand is also really handy for keeping your loved ones close when you're at the office.

Overall, I'm loving my new digital photo keychain! It's a modern day, technological brag book and I think it would make the perfect gift for parents and grandparents!

Review and Giveaway: Corel Paint It! CLOSED

Since having a child, I've become quite the amateur photographer. I have a camera hanging from my neck or wrist daily, always prepared to capture those special moments. Almost as fun as taking the pictures is editing them to create the perfect final portrait. I typically use Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 to touch up or enhance my photos, so when I was offered to review a new photo editing software package from Corel, there was no way I could pass it up.

Corel Paint It!
allows users to effortlessly turn their favorite photos into unique, digital works of art. Paint It! features a variety of brushes and preset painting styles - everything you need to add stunning painted effects to your photos in as few as three mouse clicks. With it's simple, intuitive user interface, Paint It! is suitable for photographers, scrapbookers, families and creative minds of all ages. (And yes, it is compatible with both Windows and Mac machines!)

Being of an impatient nature, I was thrilled that the software was quick and painless to install. I couldn't wait to get started. I found the program to be extremely user-friendly. The icons are large and easy to read. No manual necessary. Any tech-savvy person should be able to figure it out in no time, although there is a Help menu available for beginners. You simply choose a picture file from your computer, click on the desired effect button, press play and BOOM! A custom work of art is being drawn right before your eyes! It was so fun testing different effects with different photos and watching the digital sketches or brushstrokes splash across the screen. But caution: it's addicting! I've spent hours upon hours playing around with it. Check out some of the masterpieces I created using Paint It!:

"Modern Painting":

"Impressionist Painting" (same photo):

"Oil Painting":

"Detailed Watercolor":

"Pastel":

"Illustration":

"Watercolor Sketch":

"Pen & Ink":

"Colored Pencil Drawing":

"Pencil Drawing":

You can also add things like fairy dust or texture (sponge, furry, airbrush, etc.) to personalize your photo further. Kids would get a kick out of this!

While there's no doubt that Paint It! is a cool program, there are a few drawbacks. Mainly, it is very time-consuming. I have quite a fast processor and it can still take upwards of 5-10 minutes to complete one photo sketch. Granted, many of my photos are from my SLR and are very hi-res so you may not have this problem if you use a lower-end camera. But because it takes so long, I have to set aside a chunk of time if I want to experiment with the various effects and features. Not so easy when you're a busy mama. With Paint Shop Pro, I can apply the same effects instantaneously.

I've also had mixed feelings about the results. The drawings and paintings are hit or miss, in my opinion. I've found that landscapes tend to turn out a little better than portraits of people (perhaps because of the finer facial details?) Since 95% of my photos are of my family, I found this to be a little disappointing.

Overall, I think Paint It! would be best suited for photo editing novices or those who aspire to scrapbook, frame and/or share the "paintings" as gifts. Photoshop or PSP gurus may be frustrated by the lack of control over the finished product. However, if you aren't familiar with the more sophisticated programs or would prefer something affordable and entry-level, I think this is a wonderful, basic tool.

BUY IT: You can purchase Corel Paint It! online at http://store1.corel.com/corel or at select retailers nationwide (ARV $39.99).

FUN FREEBIE: Not sure if it's for you?! You can download a free trial version of Paint It!

WIN IT: Corel is kindly offering one lucky reader their own copy of Corel Paint It!

MAIN COURSE (MANDATORY ENTRY): Tell me about one photo you'd most like to turn into a painting. Remember to please leave your email address in your comment if it isn't visible on your profile to prevent disqualification!

Review and Giveaway: Board Book Albums CLOSED

My son loves his picture books. One of his favorite activities is looking at family photos. It's a great way to reinforce familiar people and objects, and share stories with him about places we've visited or milestones he achieved when he was younger. But, as most boys toddlers are, he is tough on books. I am always very hesitant to show him our treasured photo albums out of fear that he will crinkle or rip the pages, yank or smudge the pictures, or chew the edges. I knew I couldn't have been the only mom with this problem so I was relieved to come across Board Book Albums.

Board Book Albums are kid-friendly photo albums in a chunky, board book format. These sturdy albums can withstand typical toddler abuse and make photosharing less stressful for parents. Besides the ingenious concept, I was really touched by the story behind Board Book Albums:
In January 2007, when my daughter Lucia was a year old, we realized that she was somewhat behind her peers in meeting certain developmental milestones. In order to encourage her speech development, [our] early learning specialist (who is like a speech therapist, but works with children before they begin to talk) suggested that I find Lucia a photo album to fill with photos of her family, toys, and other familiar objects in her world. When I was unable to find a kid-friendly photo album, I came up with the idea to create a board book photo album.

My hope is that many children will enjoy our board book style photo album. Kids with autism, speech delay, or other special needs may find it particularly beneficial as a learning tool, or just something fun to create with their own favorite photos.
Each photo album measures 7" x 7" and holds up to 20 4" x 6" photos, in addition to a cover photo frame which holds a 4" x 5" photo. Simply slide your favorite photos in through the openings in the top of the pages and voila - baby board book album!

Board Book Albums was kind enough to send me their flagship Take Your Pix album in blue.

I was very impressed with the construction of the album. It was the perfect size for Nate's hands and seemed very durable. No longer do I have to cringe each time he handles our precious photos! The adorable, felt-like "My First Photos" lettering on the cover gave it an alluring texture and the ridges on each page made it easy for Nate to turn all by himself. I had a blast choosing which pictures to include. I decided to start way back at the beginning, to show him that he was once inside my belly, and work my way forward to his first birthday. The pictures couldn't be easier to insert and I like that I can easily switch them to keep things interesting.

I also liked the unadorned pages that give you the option to keep it simple or decorate, if you're the scrappy type of gal. Older children could have fun sprucing up their album with stickers, stamps, markers or other embellishments. Board Book Albums would make a wonderful gift for grandparents or out-of-town family members. You could even use them as a baby shower gift or game, where everyone at the party takes turns writing messages on the pages for baby-to-be.

Bottom line: I would highly recommend Board Book Albums for your baby or toddler - even an older child to craft or gift. Reading is always fun but it's so much more special with your very own face and story.

BUY IT: You can purchase a Board Book Album online at www.boardbookalbums.com (ARV $19.95). There are currently four colors to choose from: white, pink, blue and yellow. But you can vote for the next color!

WIN IT: One lucky reader is going to win their very own board book album in their choice of color!

MAIN COURSE (MANDATORY ENTRY): Tell me how you would use your album if you win. Would you gift it? Keep it simple? Design it as a scrapbook? Get creative! Remember to please leave your email address in your comment if it isn't visible on your profile to prevent disqualification!

SUGAR ON TOP (BONUS ENTRIES): To maximize your chances of winning, you may do any or all of the following. Be sure to complete the above mandatory entry or your bonus entries will not count! Remember to leave one comment per entry.

Review: Motionbox

In addition to the umpteen billion photos of Nate's first year (and counting!) I have stored on my computer, I have dozens of videos scattered on random SD cards throughout my house. When I want to share them with someone, I have to (a) show them in person and (b) dig them out from their secret hiding place. I know I should be more organized but I wasn't sure exactly where I could safely store them. I haven't posted many online because, call me paranoid, but I don't want just anyone to be able to view our private, family home videos. Needless to say, many family and friends - particularly those who live afar - have missed out on Nate's special milestones because of this.

Not anymore thanks to Motionbox.

Motionbox is a video publishing site that allows you to to upload, edit, store, and share your special video memories, including those that have been captured in high definition. They not only bring you the highest-quality personal video sharing service on the Web but they take privacy concerns seriously by having more advanced permissions settings. And best of all, basic membership is FREE!

The free, basic membership allows 750MB of storage but you can also upgrade to the paid, subscription-based premium service for HD playback and unlimited storage. Motionbox also offers a Professional hosting option for small businesses with commercial content.

The process is simple: shoot your video, upload from your computer or mobile phone, and share via email, Facebook or use the embed code to post onto your blog, social network profile or website. Motionbox is also compatible with the iPhone, so if you're lucky enough to own one, you can share video of your little one wherever you are.

I decided to take the basic membership for a spin and finally get organized. I found the site to be incredibly user-friendly. It walks you through the upload process but you don't even need a tutorial; it's easy and straightforward. The 750MB storage isn't huge but it does allow you to back-up and share your favorites, which is all I really needed. Several of my videos were a little long and there is a 300MB limit to each video you can upload with the basic account. However, they offer a handy dandy "trim" tool so you can cut out the uneventful parts of a video - share only what you want and make it fit. Perfect! You can also rotate your videos, which is fantastic since I had a couple of videos that I had taken in landscape and I had no idea how to modify them to make them work on other sites.

I uploaded 8 videos to my account, totalling 500MB. I have to say I was a little disappointed that it took about 2 hours to complete the upload. It could be that the server or network was unusually slow that day but I expected it to be faster. However, once the upload was complete, I was very happy with the quality of the playback. The sound was nice and crisp and the video quality was as clear as it had been on my camcorder. I was able to email a video of Nate to my mom in under a minute.

What I really love about Motionbox is the three privacy settings: public, protected or private. You can have your videos visible to anyone, just contacts you choose, or only to yourself. I was able to adjust the video settings individually. I could keep our breastfeeding videos private, while leaving the others as protected, so I don't have to worry about broadcasting our home movies to Joe Blow and the rest of the world. Only family members and friends who I invite can view them.

I also love the flipbook feature. You can select any 15-second clip from your videos and have it made into a custom flipbook for $7.99 + S&H. What a cute keepsake! This would be an adorable stocking stuffer for the holidays.

You can also have your videos turned into a 60-minute DVD you can watch on your television (ARV $19.99). This is a great back-up option so if your computer happens to crash, you're not without your family memories. It would also be a fun display during your child's birthday party so you can share all of that year's precious moments and milestones.

I would love to see Motionbox offer a sound option, so you could add background music to your videos. Perhaps that is something they will consider for the future.

Bottom line: Although the upload speed seemed slow for me, I would still recommend trying Motionbox as a secure way to store and share your personal videos.

BUY IT: Basic membership is free but if you want the HD playback capability, no annoying advertising and unlimited uploads, you can purchase the premium membership for a limited time at a $10 discount for $39.99/year.

Disclaimer: I was contacted by Lowell at Motionbox to provide a review of the free, basic service. I was not compensated in any way for this post. The opinions expressed are purely my own. You may have a different experience when using this service.

Review and Giveaway: CVS Photobook CLOSED

I have a secret I need to confess. I'm not just a SAHM. I've been spending my nights - and days - moonlighting as a mamarazzi. *blush* I stalk my son with a camera just about 12 hours a day. It doesn't matter what he's doing. He could be reading a book, playing with the pots and pans or running around in his diaper and BabyLegs. My obsession has become so great that I've accumulated upwards of 16 GB of pictures in just under 14 months. Yeah, it's that bad.

But, sadly, I have so many that I never seem to have the time to organize them, edit them, and get them printed. Most of my beautiful pictures are just sitting in my hard drive or on an SD card waiting for their fate. And let's not even get started on Nate's empty baby book.

So, when I saw an opportunity on the PR Place to review a photobook from CVS courtesy of Today's Ellen, I jumped at the chance. I could finally redeem myself for my inadequacies in the scrapbooking department.

CVS Photo offers an unlimited number of ways to turn your memories into treasured keepsakes. There are the standard prints, calendars, collages, and greeting cards in addition to the photobooks. But there are also a wide variety of unique, personalized gift ideas you can create. There are mugs for the coffee lovers, handbags for fashionistas, etched crystals for an office or bookcase, blankets for grandma, teddy bears and onesies for the little ones or new parents. You can even customize a pet bowl for the animal lover in your life. I opted for a photobook to commemorate Nate's first year of life, starting with his birth and ending with his first birthday pictures.

The process of creating the photobook was very straightforward. I created an account with CVS Photo, which was simple and painless. Once active, I uploaded about 50 pictures to an album from my computer with their bulk uploader. It was surprisingly fast. While I didn't time it to the minute, it finished uploading my pictures in what felt like no time. I'm used to waiting all day for my pictures to upload with other programs so I was happy that I didn't have to twiddle my thumbs for long.

Once I uploaded my photos, I chose the size of my book and the material and color for the cover. You can choose from a 5x7 soft cover or 8x11 hardbound, both of which include a keyhole cover so your first photo is displayed front and center. Since I want something durable that can be passed down over the years, I picked the hardbound option. The hardbound books can be made with either a linen or leather cover, each with several color options. I decided to go with a linen cover in a cyan color. There were many page designs available, including holiday and baby themes, but I chose the timeless classic white for my memory book.

Once you've customized your cover and chosen a page design, you can begin to organize the content of your book. CVS Photo offers numerous page layouts so you can include photos - in both landscape and portrait formats - as well as title or text pages. It is very easy to change the layout or design of your book at anytime if you should happen to change your mind. You can do so with just a click or two and you don't even have to click the Back button. It's all right there on one screen. Each photobook comes with 20 pages, but you can add more pages with just one click (for an additional charge). Because I had so many pictures, I added another page to include all of my favorites. The only step I thought could be improved was the preview feature. When I previewed my book prior to checkout, I couldn't inspect the text very well, as it was too small to read. I had to go back to the "edit" screen to check my spelling and grammar. It would be nice if the preview was a little larger or allowed you to zoom in to check out your writing. Aside from that issue, creating my book was rather enjoyable.

Below is a video from Today's Ellen, which demonstrates the entire process if you're a visual learner like me:

I opted to have my book shipped to my local CVS for pick up. While I was initially told it would take 5-7 business days, it only took 3. I was pysched when I got a phone call telling me my book was ready. Of course, I love when a company overdelivers on their promise. I was very pleased with the quality of my book. The pages seem thick and the detail and color in my photos were spot on. They weren't blurry or distorted at all. Here are a few sneak peeks of the finished product:

Bottom line: I would certainly recommend using CVS Photo if you are looking to create a photo memory book or personalized gift this holiday season - or anytime for that matter. The customer service was outstanding in my opinion and the book itself will be a beautiful keepsake for my son when he grows older. And with photobooks starting at $19.99, they are budget-friendly too!

BUY IT: Photobooks and other gifts can be purchased on the CVS Photo website. Photobooks start at $19.99 for a linen cover and $24.99 for a leather cover.

DELECTABLE DEAL: Just for creating a CVS Photo account, you get 20 free prints! You still have to pay for shipping but it's still a great deal.
