Review and Giveaway: Carolina Pad CLOSED

Odds are you know someone who has recently graduated - or is about to graduate - from high school or college. It's been over four years but it seems like just yesterday I wore my own collegiate cap and gown and walked across the stage to nab my long-awaited diploma (almost six years in the making!). While I had already been working full-time for a number of years, many graduates are thrust right from their robes into business suits as they enter the workforce for the first time.

If you're looking for a fabulous yet functional gift for that special graduate, look no further than Carolina Pad.

The mission of Carolina Pad is to "excite customers by bringing extraordinary fashion and innovation to everyday products". The first company to bring fashion to school and office supplies, their notebooks, binders and other products stand out from the crowd. Their collections, with catchy names like Hot Chocolate and Pattern Play, have even been featured on hit shows such as Glee, Desperate Housewives, the new 90210 and Gossip Girl.

I had the pleasure of reviewing Carolina Pad's Executive Series as part of their "Stylish Graduate" promotion. As soon as I opened my package, I gasped with delight when I saw how pretty the products were.

The sleek Padfolio (ARV $12.99) is sure to impress at a job interview or wow at your next business meeting. The patent vinyl cover and vibrant colors make it trendy and durable. It features a refillable, college-ruled notebook and inside pockets for storing business cards or other loose documents. I love the magnetic, faux buckle clasp. Its slim line makes it easy to carry. It also has a generous pen holder, which accommodates those chunky click-pens I like. I've been using my padfolio to keep track of my review/giveaway schedule for this blog and it is perfect for my needs.

The Business Card Binder (ARV $9.99) keeps standard business cards and credit cards neat and organized. Featuring a faux croc design and alphabetized tab dividers, it holds and protects up to 120 cards. I just adore the chic yellow croc pattern. I have been using my binder to organize both my PR contacts and my husband's business contacts. As a small business owner, he attends a lot of networking events and receives a small mountain of cards, which he attempts to shove in his overstuffed wallet. He has misplaced them on so many occasions, frantically searching for an associate's phone number or email address. Not anymore! Now we have everything in one central - and stylish - location.

The Flip Notes Pad (ARV $5.99) is convenient for jotting down notes on the fly. The attractive faux croc design and compact size make it perfect for keeping in your car, purse, or pocket. And it includes a pen so you never have to dig around for one again! I received a flip pad in a light blue croc pattern, which matches my spring jacket perfectly. (How did they know?!) I've been keeping mine in my purse for those times I need to write down directions, exchange my information or simply gather my thoughts. The paper inside is colored to match so no matter how short your notes may be, they will always look sweet.

The Personal Card Holder (ARV $7.99) keeps 24 standard business cards and credit cards just a snap away with a fun, faux croc style wallet. The business card binder is great to keep at home or in the office but if you travel for work or want to make a portion of your Rolodex portable, you will want to store them in this handy case. Outside of the office, it makes a fashionable credit card/driver's license/insurance card holder. You could even use it to carry wallet-sized photos of your family, which you'll indeed want to show off when the opportunity arises.

Bottom line: The Carolina Pad Executive Series is sure to please any career-minded fashionista. The products are posh, practical and best of all - affordable! They would also make a thoughtful gift for graduations, Boss's Day (October) or Secretary's Day (April).

BUY IT: You can purchase the Executive Series and other collections online at Carolina Pad or use their store locator to find a retailer near you. Right now, if you make a purchase of $40 or more in their online store, you'll receive free FedEx shipping!

Review: Simple Organized Sanity

As I've previously confessed, I have a bit of trouble when it comes to menu planning and grocery shopping. It amazes me that I can run a fairly successful review blog but plan weekly meals for the family? Fuggedaboudit. Organization is not one of my strong suits. But three little words are helping me out tremendously: Simple. Organized. Sanity.

Simple Organized Sanity
(S.O.S. - how clever!) is a mom-owned business that seeks to help families and businesses reduce their stress level and save time and money through better organization. Who better than a mom to understand our juggling act of responsibilities? Christie uses her passion for organizing to provide "real-world", helpful solutions to families, from in-home classes (if you happen to live in the SW Missouri area) to virtual and phone coaching sessions. Christie shares her vast experiences and expertise with clients to help them transform their lifestyle. S.O.S. also offers a variety of sheets and checklists to assist you with your planning, from children's birthday parties to social media trackers to chore charts. You just order the sheet(s) you want, download and save to your computer and you can print anytime you need them!

S.O.S. kindly sent me four of their menu planning sheets to review.

The Weekly Menu Planner is, well, self-explanatory. Basically, it allows you to design your family's meal plan for seven days. Since we are forever running out of milk, we do our grocery runs weekly and this planner makes it easy to plan for those trips. There is space for the ubiquitous three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) but it would be nice to have room to document snacks as well, since we are nibblers and like to munch more than three times a day.

The Two Week Menu Sheet is similar to the weekly planner but is biweekly for those of you who like to think a little further ahead. I found this sheet very useful for planning Nate's meals. Being that he is so picky, we often make him a separate meal or adapt what we're having to suit his finicky tastes. Instead of worrying about what to make with what we have on hand, I can now refer to this handy dandy piece of paper. I can also get a bird's eye view of what I am offering him on a regular basis to make sure he is receiving balanced nutrition.

The 31-Day Meal Planning Sheet is a monthly format, for you master menu planners. This would be great for those who do wholesale shopping and like to stock up in one visit, or for those who have a deep freezer and can make room for a month's worth of meals. For us, that proves difficult so the weekly or biweekly planners are more our style. For now, at least.

After you develop your final menu(s), you can then compile your Grocery List. I loved that this sheet was categorized by food group so I could not only plan my grocery route but I could ensure we are getting a variety of vitamins and minerals from each group. Having an organized grocery list helps me to avoid buying items on a whim and spending more money than I need to. I can go in with a mission and because I'm not perusing every aisle, I can get in and out of the store in record time. Score!

All of the lists were simple and no-frills. I kinda wished for some color or a cute little kitchen design to make them more aesthetic. But seeing as though these are for one-time use, it really doesn't matter too much.

You could probably create a replica of these lists with Microsoft Office if you are tech-savvy but if you are short on time or don't have the patience or know-how to make your own, I think Simple Organized Sanity is definitely the way to go. At just $.99/each, they are an extremely affordable option to save you the headache.

Bottom line: If you are menu planning-challenged and looking for a cheap and easy solution, look no further than Simple Organized Sanity.

With Nate's toys taking over our living and family rooms, I think I also may be investing in that virtual coaching option in the near future. I'm putting out an S.O.S. for some storage and organizational input!

BUY IT: You can purchase the menu sheets and other products or services online exclusively at www.simpleorganizedsanity.com.

You can stay up-to-date with all the happenings at S.O.S. by following their blog or following them on Twitter!

Review and Giveaway: Mayfair Lane CLOSED

One of my many New Year's resolutions is to get more organized. Especially in my kitchen. I can't tell you how many times my husband or I make a run to the grocery store and forget to pick up essentials because we didn't make a list. Oops! I needed some supplies to make menu planning and shopping easier but I didn't want to take up valuable countertop real estate with a bunch of notepads, pens and pencils. Magnetic notepads were useless, as we have stainless steel appliances that repel them. In my search for the perfect solution, I came across Mayfair Lane.

Mayfair Lane is the brainchild of former 3M employee, Sue Russell. Launched in Spring 2008, Mayfair Lane puts the fun in functional with stylish notepads, list pads, whiteboards, clips, journals, photo frames and more. Sue realized that most accessories for the refrigerator were backed with magnetic strips, which may work for most families but not for those who opt for stainless steel. In turn, she developed her patent-pending Happeez line of products to fill the gap. These innovative items stick to stainless steel and glass, are non-toxic and odor-free, and leave no residue behind. You can grip and re-grip again and again by simply wiping with water or vinegar-based glass cleaner. Basically no maintenance!

Mayfair Lane was kind enough to send me a Happeez list pad and clipper trio to review. I chose the Fruity theme to add some brightness to the room and complement the smell of my citrus-y, plant-based cleaners.

I could tell I was going to love my products right off the bat. The designs were even cuter and more vibrant in person. I couldn't wait to put them to use. And as I hoped, they added a hint of sophisticated color to our new kitchen.

Application was super easy. Just peel off the white backing and stick. That's it! If you need to reposition, just pull off gently and try, try again. And look, Ma, no tacky residue!

The Clipper Trio is thick and durable. I even put one to the test by hanging my 115-page Pottery Barn catalog. Unlike magnets, there was no slipping whatsoever and it stayed snug. I was sold! For those of you who are anal about keeping things straight and even, these Happeez clips are just the trick. You could hang children's artwork, notes, pictures, bills to be paid/sent, cards, letters, invitations - just about anything!

The list pad is very slim, perfect for shopping or honey-do lists. The pages are smooth, easy to write on and tear off. It's almost too pretty to write on! Almost. I think it would be a great idea to have a matching pen and pen holder to hang next to my pad so I wouldn't have to dig around for one. Nonetheless, grocery shopping is much easier in my household thanks to this little list pad.

Bottom line: I would highly recommend Mayfair Lane for your organizational needs. I love that there is finally something out there that is not only practical for stainless steel, mirrors, plastic and vinyl, but can add a sense of style at an affordable price. I'm already eyeing some of their other products, like the Kitchen Utensils clipper trio (can't have enough of those clips!) and Hip Square - Noir photo frame.

BUY IT: You can purchase the Happeez list pad (ARV $7) and clipper trio (ARV $15), as well as other Mayfair Lane products, online at www.mayfairlane.com. If you'd prefer to check them out in person, you can also search for a retailer in your area.

WIN IT: Mayfair Lane has very generously offered one lucky reader a basket of goodies worth over $75! The contents will be a surprise but a pleasant one, I'm sure!

Review and Giveaway: Relish! Meal Planning Services CLOSED

I don't know about your household but we seem to have the same meals night after night. My husband would be happy rotating buffalo wings, pizza and steak for eternity. And my son's standards are so high he'd make Chef Gordon Ramsey cower. I'd like to be more adventurous in the kitchen but when it comes to family meal planning, I feel like I fight a losing battle. Time is of the essence and I never seem to have enough to devote to gourmet dinners. I lack the creativity and expertise to come up with unique entrees and sides all on my own. Especially those that will please the boys' picky palettes.

So when I was invited to review a new online weekly menu planner from Relish!, I felt as if my prayers had been answered. Run by a team of moms, I knew they were on to something.

Relish! offers complete meal planning services, with printable grocery shopping lists and recipe storage and organization. Each week, you simply choose five entrees and one dessert that appeal to you, as illustrated below:

With the click of a button, a comprehensive grocery list will be tabulated for you to take along to the store, so you won't forget any essential ingredients, along with all of the recipes and instructions to prepare a delicious, healthy meal. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy right?! Best of all, all dinners are kitchen-tested and take 30 minutes or less to prep! Below is a sample grocery list:

Relish! also assists you with "dime-and-dash" express meals for families who want a quick and inexpensive alternative to fast food, as well as monthly freezer menus to prepare for those times you just can't get to the store - or, like me, you're just burned out and need a cooking break. You also have the option to upload your own favorite recipes so you can mix and match old and new staples. Playing hostess? Not a problem! Relish! allows you to customize your serving size and their "This and That" feature offers tips, advice and suggested menus for events of all kinds including cocktail parties, holidays, date nights, seasonal or themed parties - even school lunches.

I have to say I am very impressed with Relish! The site is easy to navigate and incredibly user-friendly. And the service is invaluable! The entrees range from somewhat exotic (Paprika Tilapia over Parmesan Polenta) to traditional homestyle (BBQ Chicken Pizza) so you are sure to find something that everyone under your roof could enjoy. They incorporate various food groups to create nutritious, colorful meals. I found the handy dandy Recipe Legend especially useful so I could quickly and accurately find meals labeled Kid-Friendly, One-Pot/Crockpot, Vegetarian or Low Calorie.

We've made several meals from Relish! with excellent results. Our favorite thus far has been the Spaghetti and Baked Meatballs with homemade Garlic Cheese Bread. The prep was relatively easy and the ingredients were things I already had on hand. It only took me a half an hour to make and it really tasted great! My husband went back for seconds and Nate was licking his fingers from the tasty meatballs. This will definitely be a meal that we adopt for good.

I also love the holiday entertaining ideas, which are going to be perfect for our upcoming Christmas party. I've already printed some of the recipes so I can make a sophisticated, home-cooked gourmet meal that tastes as if it were catered.

The only potential drawback to Relish! is the price. The subscription fee of $7/month may turn people off initially since the economy has many families pinching their pennies. However, over time, the subscription can easily pay for itself. Relish! dinners and sides cost less than $85/week and by sticking to a list, you can surely save more than $7/month. For the cost of two lattes, you can gain access to creative, time-saving meals that are good and good for you. How many cookbooks would you have to buy to get a collection this concise?

Bottom line: I would definitely recommend Relish! menu planning to get you out of your dinner rut. You can shop just once a week, get organized and save money in the process. What's not to...well...relish about that?

BUY IT: You can purchase a subscription to Relish! on their site by clicking on the Subscribe link. Just in time for the holidays, you can also give a gift subscription to that busy mama you know who is in desperate need of some help in the kitchen!

For those of you on a gluten-free diet, you will want to check out their sister site, www.GFreeCuisine.com.

WIN IT: One lucky winner is going to win a 1-year subscription to Relish! That's a $58.80 value!

MAIN COURSE (MANDATORY ENTRY): What is your biggest meal planning challenge? Remember to please leave your email address in your comment if it isn't visible on your profile or if you are not a blogger!

SUGAR ON TOP (BONUS ENTRIES): To maximize your chances of winning, you may do any or all of the following. Be sure to complete the above mandatory entry or your bonus entries will not count!

1.) Follow my blog or subscribe via reader or email. Comment telling me which method you chose. If you already follow or subscribe, that counts! (1 entry)

2.) Follow me on Twitter and tweet about this contest. Just leave me a comment with your tweet link. (1 entry)

3.) Add my blog button and/or my holiday button to your site and leave a comment with the link to where I can find it. (1 entry for each)

4.) Enter any of my other current giveaways and leave a comment telling me which one(s) you entered. (1 entry each)

Giveaway will end on December 17, 2009 at 11:59pm EST. Contest open worldwide. Winners will be chosen via Random.org and will have 48 hours to respond to congratulatory email or prize will be forfeited and another winner will be chosen.

Review: BusyBabe Daily Planners

It may have been 13 and a half months ago but I still remember it like it was yesterday. Bringing home my teensy-weensy, newborn baby from the hospital for the first time. I was an absolutely clueless first-time mama. Completely disorganized and frazzled. Did that cry mean he was hungry or tired? When was our last nursing session again? Between sleep deprivation, breastfeeding every 30 minutes to an hour and colic episodes, I was lucky if I could remember to take a pee once a day much less keep track of important details.

I thought Mommy Brain was a myth to strike fear into the hearts of the expecting. I was so very wrong. I recall friends and family asking me about our "routine". I had no idea what they were referring to nor did I have any clue how to establish one. We were in utter chaos.

If only I had known about BusyBabe back then, I could have made some sense of the confusion.
BusyBabe, a personalized daily calendar and organizer for mom and baby, was created in 2005. Co-founders Lisa Hale of Chicago and Ryan Barker of Denver , CO , were both new parents looking for an easy way to stay organized as well as track their newborns' daily activities. After months of research, various designs, and countless brainstorming sessions with new moms, the perfect tool was created.
I do have to admit this planner is pretty darn near perfect.

Where to begin? Well, the book itself is 6.5" x 11" so it's small enough to throw in a diaper bag but large enough that I wouldn't have to squint to write notes in a 3 a.m. blurry-eyed haze. The organizer covers the first six months of your baby's life, which also happen to be the most daunting. By the end of the sixth month, you'll feel more on top of things. (Trust me, you will. And with a product like this by your side, it will probably happen much sooner.)

Each daily calendar page includes space for a to-do list, appointments, food tracker, sleep tracker, pattern tracker (diaper output, behaviors, medications, etc.), buzz (events, travels, firsts, milestones), and menu/dinner plans. You can even record the weather that day. However, one of my favorite features is an inspiring quote or tip at the top of every page. Something that simple really helps me to start the day off on the right foot, even if I had a cumulative three hours sleep the previous night.

There are tabbed dividers to separate the months and sections, which include baby's health record, doctor appointment details and babysitter notes. These tabs make it super easy to navigate and find exactly where you want to go. My favorite section has to be "me time", where you can jot down books you want to read, movies you want to see and places you want to visit. When you're so wrapped up in meeting the needs of your little one, it's easy to lose sight of your own. Even if you don't accomplish everything on the list(s), it's nice to aspire towards more than making it through tummy time without a meltdown.

In addition to the sections noted above, there is room to log important contacts, milestones, baby gifts, solid foods you've tried and any reactions or allergies, as well as exercise goals to shed that postpartum weight. 9 months on, 9 months off, they say. What better way to get motivated than to put your plan in writing? There are blank note pages in the rear of the book that can act as a journal for when the creative bug strikes you.

Wait...there's more! There are also helpful checklists for packing mom and baby, childproofing, and interviewing a babysitter, as well as a comprehensive list of useful websites and resources for everything from breastfeeding to finances. Is there anything they didn't think of? This planner puts everything in one place so you don't have to scramble for a phone number or search the depths of your exhausted brain to recall when exactly your baby rolled over for the first time.

What makes BusyBabe unique from other planners on the market is its personalization option. It's the only planner that can be customized with your baby's photo and birth stats. Just email them a photo and baby's birth details once your little blessing arrives and you'll have your custom planner in no time! There are 3 adorable cover designs to choose from for both boys and girls. And all personalized planners contain prefilled dates, so that's one less thing you have to fill in! There is also a standard cover design - which I received - for the "nesters" who just can't wait another day to personalize their planner. It was an adorable yet contemporary, gender-neutral design. The cover was a thick plastic that could easily be wiped clean should bottle or stomach contents find their way onto it. The spiral binding gives it a clean look and won't snag that sweet baby layette. I can only imagine how sweet it would be with my little boy's photo on the front. It would certainly urge me to write in it more than his baby book.

Not only is it practical, it also makes a beautiful keepsake. On your baby's first birthday, you can pull out your planner and look back at all of baby's firsts, seeing them grow up before your very eyes yet again. It's a great reminder of how far you've come - and probably a bit of a tearjerker if you're sappy like me.

I seriously wouldn't change a thing about the content of this planner. As for the covers, I'd like to see more whimsical themes or more colors. But that is hardly a deterrent.

Bottom line: I would highly recommend the BusyBabe Planner as a thoughtful, special gift for any expectant mom. There's no better present than sanity. And truth be told, it's going to be hard to give this up to my cousin, due in December with her first child. It's so nice I am tempted to be greedy and keep it for myself for whenever we are blessed with a second baby.

BUY IT: You can order your BusyBabe Planner online or by phone at (888) 867-7526. Personalized, predated planners retail for $29.95, while the standard planner (you have to fill in dates) goes for $19.95.

Disclaimer: As I mentioned, I was sent a standard planner from BusyBabe to facilitate my candid review. I was in no other way compensated for this post.

Special thanks to Lisa at BusyBabe and the PR Place for this review opportunity!

Review: Amy Knapp's Family Organizer

As a mom, it's a constant struggle for me to stay organized. The moment I think I make some headway on my massive to-do list, I find myself once again scrambling to cross off the tasks. Keeping track of bills, budgets, birthdays, doctor's appointments, groceries, playdates, blog review deadlines - it can easily become overwhelming. It's a never ending job to stay on top of your game. And with my persistent mommy brain, it's a wonder I make it anywhere on time or get anything done at all.

So, I was thrilled to win Amy Knapp's Family Organizer during a launch party giveway at Inexpensively. No longer would I have to fish my way through crumbled fragments of post-it notes or distressed looseleaf pages. I now had a singular place to log all of those little details swirling around in my brain. And I could finally get rid of those aforementioned notepad escapists.

There's a lot to love about this organizer. First of all, it's an 18-month planner, which I personally like. The overlap gives me more time to transfer all of the necessary information. But more months doesn't equal more bulk in this case. The organizer is still compact enough to throw in a medium-sized purse, tote or diaper bag.

There's a yearly grid near the front of the book so you can get a broad overview of which dates fall on which day. There are monthly calendars (with holidays conveniently written in) to see everything at a glance. This format is perfect for planning school/work assignments, vacations, or to note when bills are due. Amy even included sheets of stickers to document birthdays, vacations, doctor's appointments, school days off and bill due dates. Pure eye candy for a visual person like me! The weekly views contain to-do lists, perforated grocery lists (to tear out and take with you to the grocer - how ingenious!) and menu planning lists. I have yet to see an organizer or agenda that contains all of these useful features.

Another nice attribute is the weekly inspirational quotes, like "great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us daily." It's just the motivation I need to complete those projects on my insurmountable to-do list.

At the rear of the planner, there is room for phone, address and web references (no more forgetting your online passwords!), a monthly and annual budget planner, and babysitter pages with space to record your child(ren)'s likes, dislikes, allergies and bedtime.

Seriously, almost no stone was unturned when the content this planner was conceived. With that being said, there are a few little things that I think could be improved upon.

The cover design is not very stylish or modern. It's simple and serves its purpose, which is undeniably most important in a product such as this, but I'm tempted to buy one of the several aesthetic cover options sold separately. It would be great to be able to customize it as you can with other brands. My biggest gripe is I wish there had been tabs so I could quickly flip to my desired month. Instead, I have to use a paper clip or tab through a million pages to get where I want to go. I could buy some DIY sticky tabs but it would save me time to include that little accessory. Neither of these factors, however, would be enough to discourage me from purchasing the planner.

Bottom line: Despite the minor drawbacks, I would definitely recommend Amy Knapp's Family Organizer to any mom in desperate need of an all-inclusive planning system. And truly, what mom doesn't need that?!

BUY IT: You can purchase Amy Knapp's Family Organizer (ARV $14.99) on their website, Amazon.com, or if you want to save on shipping, you can visit your local Barnes and Noble, Borders or Books A Million.

Amy Knapp has an extensive product line. In addition to the Family Organizer, they offer a Christian Organizer, Pregnancy/Newborn Organizer, Homeschooling Organizer, a Big Grid oversized wall planner, and the new inFocus Digital Organizer. So, no matter what your busy lifestyle entails, you can keep it together.

Let's face it: you may not feel like SuperMom. But with an organizer like this, you can at least look like you are.

Disclaimer: As I mentioned above, I won this organizer in a giveaway during a Twitter sitewarming party. I was in no way compensated for this review.
