Thank you to snackTAXI for their participation in the Goodie Goodie Gumdrops Earth Week Event!
In an effort to save money, my husband and I have cut back on eating out for lunch. This means taking the time to pack healthy, homemade meals and snacks to bring to work or take on the go. Sounds great, right? It is...until I pull out the Ziploc bags. I feel so wasteful using those disposable, plastic pockets. Did you know that just one reusable bag has the potential to eliminate an average of 1,000 plastic bags over its lifetime?!
snackTAXI was the invention of Erin Kelly-Dill back in 2003 as an alternative to the plastic baggies that head straight of the landfill after just one use. snackTAXIs feature a 100% cotton exterior and waterproof liner made of nylon with a polyurethane coating. Extensive product testing reveals that snackTAXI materials are free of heavy metals, phthalates, PBBs and PBDEs. Not only are snackTAXIs reusable and safe, but they are ultra-convenient. They can be machine-washed with an unscented detergent or simply rinsed with water and air-dried. snackTAXIs are made in a home-based workshop in MA by local sewers, in a variety of fun colors, prints and sizes. You can feel good going green and supporting local business!
snackTAXI kindly sent me a waste-free lunch starter kit including a sandwich sack, snack sack and cloth napkin to review.
I was immediately impressed with the high-quality construction. You could tell these bags were not going to fall apart after a few washes. And the vibrant prints were cute and eye-catching, appealing to kids and adults alike. Unlike hard Tupperware containers that are bulky and oversized (and may contain BPA), snackTAXIs are perfectly portable and fit easily into a lunchbox, purse, or bag.
The sandwich sack (ARV $8.95) was a generous 7.5" (w) x 6" (h). I had more than enough room to store my tuna salad sandwich on white bread for a family picnic at the park. With its adjustable velcro closure, it could easily accommodate a bagel, donut, 6" sub, or piled-high sandwich - probably even those made of thicker, Texas toast-style bread. The twice-as-nice napkin (ARV $3.95) is actually two napkins in one, with two coordinating prints on each side. It is thick and durable and measures 8" (w) x 14" (h) so it can protect your lap from drops and spills or simply blot messes from the corners of your mouth. It could also make a great burp cloth!
The bag that has come most in handy for us has been the snack sack (ARV $6.95). Measuring 6" (w) x 4.5" (h), it is the perfect size for nearly any snack. Pretzels, chips, puffs, you name it. The velcro closure is easy for my 20-month old to open himself, making it a great option for Grandma's house or other travels. Because Nate is still quite young and thinks it is a fun game to dump the contents onto the floor, I prefer spill-proof containers for his more crumbly snacks. But I've found the snackTAXI snack sack is great for larger treats like apple slices, baby carrots or celery sticks. Once he gets a little older, I'm sure he'll be better equipped to handle the bag independently. For now Mommy will just have to keep an eagle eye on him - when she isn't using it for herself!
We like our snackTAXIs so much, I'm already eyeing more prints. Like the Egg Beaters and Cuppa sandwich sacks and Tea For Two, Edgy Veggies and Apples & Pears snack sacks.
Bottom line: With their affordable prices and sweet, environmentally-conscious designs, everyone should hail themselves a snackTAXI.
