Review: SmartMouth Mouthwash

I hate waking up in the morning. Not just because I can never seem to get enough sleep. I'm a mom - that's a given. But because of the dog breath that greets me when I open my eyes. Even if I brush and floss and rinse with mouthwash at night, I still wake up most days hoping my husband won't lean in for a smooch and get an unattractive surprise.

Traditional mouthwash contains alcohol, which not only burns and stings as you swish, but only kills germs and prevents bad breath for only one hour. That's hardly enough time to do your hair and makeup and walk out the door, much less last until morning. The drying effect of the alcohol can also lead to worse breath. Only one product on the market can eliminate bad breath for up to 12 hours with just one use: SmartMouth Mouthwash.

SmartMouth Mouthwash doesn't just mask the problem. It goes straight to the source. SmartMouth blocks bacteria from eating protein particles, preventing them from producing the noxious sulfur gases that lead to bad breath. Genius, right? Perhaps that's because the technology behind the brand was invented by Dr. Israel Kleinberg, Chairman of Oral Biology and Pathology at SUNY, Stony Brook and developed by Dr. Marvin Cohen, the author of the bad breath section of the Encyclopedia Britannica, 1998 Medical Edition! SmartMouth is clinically proven to keep bad breath at bay at least 12 times longer than the competition. And that's not just lip service. All SmartMouth claims have been substantiated according to the Better Business Bureau's National Advertising Division, whose sole purpose is to foster truth in advertising. Unlike Listerine, Scope, ACT, Crest Pro-Health and other mouthwashes, you simply rinse in the A.M. to stay fresh all day and rinse again before bedtime to stop morning breath in its tracks.

What makes SmartMouth so special, you ask? It has a unique, patent-pending dual-bottle formula that is activated each time you rinse for maximum strength and freshness. Solution #1 contains an odor eliminator, while Solution #2 contains zinc. Mixed together, they release zinc ions, which act as a barrier between bacteria and the protein particles they ingest. You simply pump twice from each bottle into the enclosed cup, swish for 30-60 seconds and spit. Ta-da! Minty breath for 12 hours. Eat that, morning breath!

SmartMouth is 100% alcohol-free, making it safe for ages 6 and up. It will not stain teeth, dentures or crowns and is dentist recommended.

I had the pleasure of reviewing SmartMouth and let me tell you...it really works! I have been using it religiously, twice a day, for 2 weeks and my breath has been worlds better! I don't wake up with that tacky, sticky, dry feeling anymore that only comes from wicked morning breath. Meaning my husband now has the green light for that good morning kiss! I even indulged in some onion and garlic here and there after using SmartMouth and while it didn't completely absorb the odor, my breath wasn't nearly as bad as it normally gets. The taste of the mouthwash was not overpowering, just a slight minty flavor. I was so happy that it didn't burn my mouth like when I swish with Listerine. Many of the stronger mouthwashes cause me pain and I avoid rinsing because of it.

There are just a few disadvantages I found with SmartMouth. First, having two bottles obviously takes up more counterspace. We are fortunate enough to have a double vanity so room isn't an issue for us but having lived in many apartments, I know this could be a problem for some. Also, the two pump bottles are not travel-friendly. I would be too afraid of spillage, and it would just take up too much room in my suitcase or overnight bag. Lastly, I did have temporary cotton mouth after using SmartMouth the first few times. It was pretty annoying for awhile but I found that shortening my swish time to 30 seconds instead of 60 did the trick. Overall, I would gladly put up with these in return for an effective product.

Bottom line: Being a SmartMouth is no longer an insult. I would recommend using this mouthwash as a defense against awful morning breath or if you suffer from halitosis. I like that it is alcohol-free and less harsh than other brands - yet far more effective! Plus, I don't have to constantly worry about having mints on hand.

BUY IT: You can find SmartMouth Mouthwash at most drugstores and major retailers nationwide including CVS, Kmart, Rite Aid, Target, Walmart and Walgreens (ARV $10.99). You can use this handy dandy store locator to find the one nearest you! SmartMouth also offers toothpaste, gum and mints for comprehensive oral care.
